Why Are So Many Of The Army Soldiers Going Awol?

U.S. Army prosecutions of desertion and other unauthorized absences have risen sharply in the past four years, resulting in thousands more negative discharges and prison time for junior soldiers and combat-tested veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, military records show.
The increased prosecutions are meant, in effect, to serve as a deterrent to a growing number of soldiers who might be looking for a way to avoid heading – or heading back – to Iraq, The use of courts-martial for these violations, which before 2002 were treated mostly as unpunished nuisances, is a sign that active-duty forces are being stretched to their limits, said military lawyers and mental health experts.
“They are scraping to get people to go back, and people are worn out,” said Thomas Grieger, a senior Navy psychiatrist.
Some soldiers are cutting of trigger fingers to keep from going back to Iraq said Thomas Grieger. They know the war is wrong and the USA is losing.

  1. Because we have no reason to be in Iraq, I mean what do you all fall back on the old “Oh deary me there are weapons of mass Destruction in Iraq.” or is it more along the lines of “The Iraqis support terrorism and terrorist activities” either way you need to pull your head out of that dark smelly place you have it stuck in and wake up, we are causing more terrorism than we are stopping. The soliders who have gone AWOL are the real heros in this.

  2. We aren’t losing. We are fighting an enemy who isn’t afraid to die, and an enemy who hide among women and children. They’re fighting for some Mohammed guy and blowing themselves up.

  3. Probably because they don’t want to die just yet.
I doubt it’s because of some deep seated moral conviction.

  4. When did you first discover you liked it up @ss?

  5. ummm…if they cut off their trigger fingers, they just teach the soldiers how to shoot with their middle one. I know of one soldier who lost his trigger finger and had to learn this.

  6. Where is your back up for your assertion?
I think that you do not have any. One of the other answers, show back that showing how wrong you are.
Are you trying to destroy the USA moral?

  7. still marching to the beat of a different drummer…

  8. Thats odd. I live on one of the 2 largest Army bases in the US and I only know of 1 that has gone AWOL. But I guess thats alot considering most of the deserters and draft dodgers went to Canada before reporting for duty during Vietnam.
As for cutting of trigger fingers, that wouldn’t matter. They’d send them anyway. Also, the Senior Navy Psychiatrist you mentioned would never state to the press that “They know the war is wrong and the USA is losing”. Doing so would get him a a lot of trouble. So my guess is you put that on there yourself. But then you also claim to be a veteran, which is odd because didn’t you have another acct. a while back and you were removed. On that one, you stated just the opposite. HMM….somebody’s full of crap.

  9. Quote your source! The reason “you think” there are more service men going AWOL is because you are seeing EVERY individual instance covered in the press. Everyone knows that the liberal press is against this war and will slant their coverage accordingly.

  10. they’re sending these kids back for 3 and 4 tours cause no one wants to fight bushes war.
it’s also good to drive them out so you don’t have to pay pensions and promised benefits, an old trick.

  11. people that go AWOL should be discharger from the military or some prison time. They sign a paper to be in the military. If this mean to go to war, we must go

  12. hmmm, why are so many going awol? hmmm, let’s see… . because there’s a war? hmmm, and the war is unwinable?
heck, that’s a better excuse then the president had for deserting; great role model for a combat soldier.

  13. There you go again, falsifying a story to fit your agenda. I couldn’t find the story you modified since you are too much a coward and never post a link so I included a link that proves you wrong.
Desertions in the military are at an historic low right now.http://www.strategypage.com/militaryforu…http://usmilitary.about.com/od/justicela…

  14. Perhaps they’re just following the behavior established long ago by their commander in chief, G.W Bush.

  15. Where did you get that idea?

  16. There have been cowards and summer soldiers in all wars.

  17. fear

  18. How do I give a question a thumns down?
dude if you want us to take your bogus claims seriously give some links for that garbage. Sure, there are some pansies in the Army who want to whine I got rid of a few after “torturing” them until they were 6 months from getting out THEN discharging them for whatever reason.
As I have a banner saying in my front yard…..
“Save a soldier, shoot a Democrat”
THEY are the ones making this a losing war.
I love to see that some of the pansies have chimed in after me. I guess nobody realizes that “bushes war” has kept this country safe. Al Qaeda has not attacked the U.S. since 9/11/2001 and only ONCE during the presidency of George W. Bush. During the Presidency of their HERO the almighty king of oval office porn, aka Clinton, the country was attacked 5 flippin times. If that is what they wish to have rather then safety and security then so be it but I would rather our service members take out the people who would gladly take their heads off. How can people love someone so much knowing that same person would take their head off?
I have led troops in combat and some of them were the type going AWOL. I took those scared boys over there and then I had to get out of the Army. When they came up for deployment one went AWOL and his reason? I wasnt in charge some pi33 ant person who was one of these scared p.o.s’s was in charge and he didnt want to have to kill her to keep himself alive.
EDIT: Just one other thing. I am also tired of hearing about people who “went intothe military only for college” or whatever stupid excuse to keep from getting them charged for being a chicken sh&&. The average enlistment is 4 years in the service with some being as low as 2 years and some being as high as 6 years for highly specialized fields. Given we are at war the 2 year enlistments have been halted which leaves 3 years as the lowest. Last time I checked 9/11 was almost 6 years ago meaning that 98% of our armed forces have signed up AFTER WE WERE AT WAR. Sure, the people in the IRR can complain but that just goes back to the original thing of quit being a pansy, you signed up for the military. Here is the Merriam-Webster definition of military.
    Main Entry: 1mil·i·tary
    Pronunciation: ‘mi-l&-”ter-E
    Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English, from Latin militaris, from milit-, miles soldier
1 a : of or relating to soldiers, arms, or war b : of or relating to armed forces; especially : of or relating to ground or sometimes ground and air forces as opposed to naval forces
2 a : performed or made by armed forces b : supported by armed force
3 : of or relating to the army
I am not seeing college, bonus, travel, women, uniform, or whatever excuse you can think of in there. I do, however, see war.

  19. Its probley better that they run away here, here the COWARDS only go to prison, In enemy country they die by the enemy or firing squad.
