It’s The Middle Of Winter, Why Is My Old Dog Shedding So Much, What Can We Do To Help Him?

Or St. Bernard/Pit Bull/Chow who is going on 14 has recently started shedding worse than he has ever shed before. We took him to the vet a few months ago and we were told that for as old as he is he’s in good health. Besides the fact that he’s a little under weight, deaf and has dementia. But beside that in good health. Any good suggestions for all the shedding. We live in Indiana so the winters are cold. But he lives in the house. We do a lot of brushing but the hair just keeps coming out. We hope to have a few more good years with him and of course in the mean time we give him lots of love and care during his senior moments. And yes even dogs have senior moments.

  1. My dog who is 3 and is a german shepherd/malamute mix is shedding alot too right now, but I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. I think it’s because his coat is so thick and he’s inside and outside a lot that it just keeps shedding. I really don’t think it’s anything too serious, but if you are concerned, ask your vet about it. As long as you are not seeing any balding areas it sounds like it’s just the natural shedding process.

  2. He should be blowing him summer coat and growing new fur. My GSD, shedding like crazy before winter and summer, he grows black fur in winter and shed white, and grows white in summer and shed black. You might want to get a furminator de-shedding tool to reduce shedding in the house. My dogs get furminatored every 2 days for 20 mins which has reduce the amount shed in the house.

I live in Ohio and I have a chow/shepherd mix. He is at least 13 (not sure of his age since I got him from the pound 11 years ago, and he was full-grown when I got him). And he doesn’t shed.
How much time does your dog spend outside? My chow mix loves to spend all winter outdoors. Maybe that’s why he doesn’t shed!?
Is your dog an indoor dog? Can you let him spend more time outside?

  4. chows shed badly normally all year around nothing to worry bout my rottweiler does the same sheds everywhere
