Can You Return An Unopened Over The Counter Medication?

My wife is pregnant and has a bad cold. Last night, I went to Walmart and bought some Robitussin and when I got home, I realized I bought the one not recommended for pregnant women instead of the basic Robitussin. We did not even open the box and decided to use some home made remedies. If it is unopened, can I return this medicine for a refund?

  1. Yup! they will accept it with no problems. The only time you cannot take a medicine back is like to a pharmacy with a prescription drug. I know where I live (Texas) there are Walgreen’s pharmacies that will even take them back if they are opened and still basically full if it didn’t work out or there was an allergic reaction.

  2. No. They have a great fear of someone figuring out a way to invisibly contaminate meds. You might be lucky though.
As with any drug, if you are pregnant or nursing a baby, seek the advice of a health professional before using Robitussin® products.

If the seal has not been broken they will probably give you a voucher for the relevant amount instead of cash provided you can produce the receipt. If you have thrown out the receipt then, of course, you can’t get a refund.

  4. if the seal has not been broke you can return it.
