Are The Symptoms Of Hyperactive And Hypoactive Thyroids Extremely Similar?
Because I am having blood tests done this week to test whether my thyroid is underactive or overactive and I looked at some symptom lists online and it appears that I have lots of symptoms that match both conditions.
Only a few symptoms such as headache and mood changes are similar. Most of the other symptoms are the exteme opposite.
Hyperactive – weight loss, diarrhea, headaches, mood changes, anxiety, increased sweating, nervousness, fast heart rate
hypoactive – weight gain, constipation, headaches, mood hanges, dry skin, thinning hair, slow heart rate, muscle and joint aches, ridged fingernails with no moons, sensitivity to light, menstrual changes, deepened voice, decreased sex drive, sleep apnea, low body temp, depression, and fatigue
To find out if you have a thyroid problem, get a morning test of TSH, free t4, free t3, and a thyroid antibody test
yes. some symptoms are seen more commonly with overactive thyroid, but still can be seen with under active gland, and vice versa.
also you don’t need to have the whole list of symptoms to have the disease.
blood test are the most reliable in differentiating between the 2.
These are diametrically opposite conditions.
Hypothyroidism- patient is slow with a slow pulse, cold course skin, course facial features, tends to gain weight, may retain fluid especially in the legs. and may get memory loss and occasionally psychiatric disturbance. May develop diffuse enlargement of the thyroid.
Hyperthyroidism- patient is fidgety and anxious, fast pulse, sweaty hot skin and may lose weight. Patient may also develop protruding staring eyes, which may precede the other symptoms. May develop nodular enlargement of the thyroid.
It is a bit difficult to get both sets of vertually opposite symptoms!
Not at all.
