What Kind Of Education Do I Have To Get If I Want To Research Cures For Cancer And Diseases?
And not only cancer..other diseases too. Today I was watching Oprah and they were talking about regenerating organs, and growing them out of the body for someone to have when their’s is failing. I thought that was soo cool.
I would love to do that kind of stuff, but what would I have to be? Is it a medical doctor? Or can I do that kind of stuff with a Phd in biology?
How would I go about getting a job like that? Where would I work?
Thanks!
Biology would be a good class to pay attention it, but you are going to want to take Anatomy and any health classes your school may offer as well. My high school offers a class in which students go to the local hospital as “clinical students” where they get experience in the medical field. I don’t listen nor trust Oprah, because she has a history of endorsing quack products. But from searching what you are talking about, it seems it could be for real. It’s not my say; but anyway, get involved in the health field. You don’t want to go into something you don’t really love; as a volunteer in a hospital, I’ll tell you that if you don’t really really love your job, you’re going to it beyond belief.
Be prepared a long time in school.
To do any kind of independent research in the medical field you’re going to need a Ph.D. Either an M.D. or a Ph.D in biology at the minimum. I hope you REALLY love school, because you’re going to be there probably about 8-12 years beyond high school, depending on if you want to specialize or not. My degree is only a Bachelor’s and I’ve taken like 5 microbiology courses, immunology, parasitology, 2 courses of hematology, blood banking, 7 courses of chemistry ranging from inorganic 1 and 2, organic 1 and 2, biochemistry and 2 courses of clinical chemistry, urinalysis and body fluid analysis, intro to clinical lab science, genetics, molecular diagnostics, mycology, virology, and most of those courses are just in my MAJOR. That wasn’t including my prerequisite courses. I really hope you LOVE science and school.
If you’re serious about it, plan on a combined MD/PhD program.
