How Come People In The Old Days Never Died Of Cancer?
I know this sounds strange, but why not? Like, now-a-days you always hear of people dying of cancer. But when you read about people who died in the 1800’s, you never hear of them dying of cancer.
I know cancer isn’t a disease, its something that just forms, so its not like the disease wasn’t very common back then.
Well, people say the incidence of cancer now a days is much higher, especialy pedatric cancer, but that i believe is due to the fact that now they know about so many different kinds of cancer, and know how to tell when something is cancer. It could be possible today enviornment and poultion, and chemicals etc. can lead to a higher chance of gettng cancer because they can mutate the DNA, but also i think you didn’t hear about people dying of cancer then because they just did not know that it was cancer making the person sick, and die.
You should probably research a little more. We have better technology to detect the DISEASE, cancer. We have better technology to treat the disease. We also have better technology in the way of communications, to hear of the disease. There’s also more people and more people living longer, which increases the risk of getting cancer. When someone died of cancer in the 1800’s thru the early 1900’s, they blamed it on trauma or something else because they didn’t know cancer.
Cancer has afflicted humans throughout recorded history. It is no surprise that from the dawn of history people have written about cancer. Some of the earliest evidence of cancer is found among fossilized bone tumors, human mummies in ancient Egypt, and ancient manuscripts. Bone remains of mummies have revealed growths suggestive of the bone cancer, osteosarcoma. In other cases, bony skull destruction as seen in cancer of the head and neck has been found.
Our oldest description of cancer (although the term cancer was not used) was discovered in Egypt and dates back to approximately 1600 B.C. The Edwin Smith Papyrus, or writing, describes 8 cases of tumors or ulcers of the breast that were treated by cauterization, with a tool called “the fire drill.” The writing says about the disease, “There is no treatment.”
Maybe this website will get you started::
The main reason that it was not as common back then is probably because it was often not detected back then. Nowadays the medical technology is much better and so people are more likely to find out what is wrong with them before they die.
Also the general public is more aware of the signs and symptoms of cancer to be concerned about and so they seek medical attention sooner that people did in the past – this also means that more people are diagnosed with it.
Lifestyle changes have probably contributed somewhat to the increase in cancer too.
All the best
Life expectancy was younger back then so when people aged 50 and above became ill it wasn’t really a big issue and they didn’t have the diagnostic equipment/tests etc back then.
Some symptoms of brain tumours were sometimes associated with syphillus or mental illness.
Just out of interest – do you know that there is no actual word for Cancer in most of the chinese languages.
They did…. but back in the 1800’s you were more likely to die from starvation or some sort of bodily injury.. Many people didn’t live past 45, and cancer develops in older people. Back then they died from the flu, measles, TB, or the common cold. The only medicines they had were from herbs and foods. There wasn’t even aspirin.
Now you hear about cancer more because people are living to older ages and using risky behavior. For instance, being in the sun too much with no sun protection puts you at risk for skin cancer, and smoking for getting lung cancer.
The instance of cancer where so few and far between that it was virtually never that anyone died of it except a very people. The main reason for the huge increase in death cause by cancer despite billions being collected by charities for research is because cancer is a huge money making system. If a cheap cure was found that did not cost a lot for instance a particular food type or vitamin then thousands of people would be out of work and a lot of companies would have to close.
The fact is that there is a lot of disinformation going on everywhere, the information is out there as to why in some remote villages people never die of cancer why they live past 100 years. When these people move to the cities and adopt a modern diet they fall prey to the same disease as us. It’s in the food we eat !! You have to eat food which will provide the body with the nutrients it needs to cure itself.

Cancer did exist back then, and people did die from it, but modern living has drastically increased the incidence of it.
Fast food, processed food, plastics, pollution and chemicals found in cosmetics etc cause cancer.
Probably they didn’t know much about it, or know how to treat it. Now a days we have specialist and more people who are aware.
Ulysses S Grant died of cancer.
Remember that the life expectancy was only 40 years old. Cancer has a tendency to inflict people of more advanced age.
They did!! But the majority of people put death down to TB.
