For People With Cancer – Do You Ever Feel Like You’re The One Having To Reassure Others?

I know how selfish this must sound, but do you ever feel like all your energy is going into reassuring friends/family that everything’s okay when it should be the other way around?

  1. Yes. my wife & I made a rule “no one comes into my hospital room if they are crying”. That worked pretty well. I found I could handle having cancer, just don’t let the dishwasher break. I mean all the little things is what got to me. Just let them know it’s all in God’s hands. Good luck with your battle.

  2. This is an excellent point. I see this every day in practice, where the patient is the “strong” one. For some, it is because they were strong when well; for others it is because they have to be, as everyone around them is less so. Of course they care and want reassurance all is well, but loved ones can carry that too far. You should not feel afraid to discuss this with them. It is not selfish- it is normal I think.
    God bless, best wishes

  3. Yes – they are frightened it may happen to them, and suddenly realise it is awfully close.
One reason why I started Having Fun After Cancer http://www.after-cancer.com so people realise we do live years longer, if we are lucky.
    Good luck

  4. my mom did.. she felt like she had to be the strong one. I told her many times that we will all be ok.. she needs to concentrate on her and getting better…well she had all the love and support around her but died still worrying about her kids.
